Earn More on Medium A New Writers Bootcamp #1
So You Want to Earn Money Writing: Topics, Consistency, and Publishing
Whether you’re a new writer on Medium or you’ve been thinking about joining Medium. It’s important to know how best to engage on the platform. Each platform we use has its own nuances, for instance:
Tik-Tok
Tik-Tok is a strong community of musicians, micro-experts, and storytellers/influencers.
Tik-Tok is a viral community, this is due to its use of perpetual storytelling through the Duet feature. You can have one video thread, create 10,000 sub-stories, and half of those go viral.
Tik-Toks tags are really great accelerators for boosting your content or becoming part of the conversation on ______ topic/tag.
Twitter is an ongoing conversation community
You need to become a part of the conversation if you want to be relevant
Twitter can be used to engage with your favorite companies to sort out customer service issues, which is very, very useful.
Each subreddit has their own rules
Crossposts matter, but make sure it is relevant to the subreddit
Community First & Anti-Spam stance, if you’re not a part of the subreddit community and you try to post a link. Often you’ll find yourself banned. Become a member of the community through interaction first.
These are just a few platforms and some of their nuances. Medium is no different; the sooner you learn the nuances, the sooner you create sustainable momentum. Let’s walk through the journey most writers deal with when they start on Medium.
Two of the most common questions I get from people are: is it worth joining Medium? And will writing on Medium make me money? Let’s dive in and find out.
Is Medium Worth Joining?
I have a bias, I’m here on Medium.com as a paying member. I’ve been a paying member for years. However, I have only just begun writing consistently. As a now consistent writer, I say yes, Medium is worth joining. Here are a few of my favorite parts about Medium:
Medium is an uplifting community of writers
Medium has hidden depth in the articles, publications, and community
Medium encourages quality work
Medium is great for learning and testing your SEO knowledge
Medium is a safe testing ground for new writers looking to become better at writing.
I believe in writing on Medium, which is why I continue to do it. If you plan on joining and using my link I receive a small commission. I will be on Medium for the foreseeable future with the ups and downs. No platform is perfect, but I have found that Medium still offers a really solid platform, experience, and community, so I’m sticking around.
Will Writing on Medium Make Me Money?
Now, I know some of you are dying to know; will writing on Medium make me money?
The short answer is maybe.
The longer answer is yes. Medium as a platform has created one of the last community-based platforms that empowers all members to earn something for their work. You can earn good money on Medium like Tim Ferriss, Darius Foroux, and Zulie Rane. That said, to make money on Medium requires quality, quantity, and consistency. Medium is not a get-rich overnight platform. If you’re looking for that, sorry, Charlie. If you put in a year or two of labor, you could pull some really decent money. Writing still works; anyone who says otherwise is lying.

~Fiction → Storytelling & Narrative
~Psychology → Personal Development & Growth
~Marketing → Search Engine Optimization
Consistency
Once you’ve picked your topics, it’s important to find consistency in writing, editing, and publishing. Consistency helps you build the habit of writing on Medium. In addition to giving you the best momentum with the Medium algorithm.
From Self Published to Publications
Your first few pieces should be self-published. However, as soon as you’re able to, you’ll want to become a “Writer” for different publications. Becoming a writer is the easy part. Most publications offer a form that you fill out, and they add you. The challenge with publications is making sure your article aligns with the specific topics of their publication.
You will be rejected from publications 8/10. It’s not personal. They are monitoring their publications topics and audience.
There are some publications that are more lenient for new writers. Look to join those first, but don’t lose sight of being published in other publications either.
One of the benefits of being published is that you reach new audiences. This increases the number of people who not only see your article but, also draw new followers to your content if it speaks to them.
From Self-Published to Publications Takeaways
